Common garbage disposal problems
| What happens | Likely cause | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hums but doesn't grind | Something wedged between the plate and the grinding ring | Free the flywheel with a hex key from below |
| No sound at all | Tripped reset button, tripped breaker, or a failed switch or motor | Reset, check power, then repair or replace |
| Leaks from the top | Loose mounting or failed plumber's putty at the sink flange | Reseal the flange |
| Leaks from the side | Loose dishwasher or drain connection | Tighten or replace the gasket |
| Leaks from the bottom | Internal seal failure, often corrosion | Replace the disposal |
| Sink drains slowly | Food waste packed in the trap or drain line | Clear the trap or line |
| Loud grinding or rattling | Metal object inside, or worn bearings | Remove the object; replace if bearings are gone |
What you can safely check yourself
Always switch off the power before reaching near a disposal. Never put your hand inside one.
- Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it has tripped, it'll click in.
- Check the breaker or the outlet under the sink (some plug in, some are hardwired).
- Free a jam: with the power off, insert a 1/4-inch hex key into the socket on the bottom center and work it back and forth until it turns freely. Remove the object from above with tongs, then reset.
If it still hums, trips repeatedly or leaks from the body, it needs a plumber.
How disposal repair and replacement is done
The plumber checks power, the switch and the motor, frees jams and clears the drain. If the unit is failing, the old disposal is removed from its mounting ring, the sink flange is resealed, and a new unit is mounted and connected to the drain and the dishwasher line.
On a new installation where there was no disposal before, an outlet or switch may be needed, which is electrical work. The system is then run with water to check for leaks at every joint and confirm the dishwasher drains properly.
Disposals are sized by horsepower. A 1/3 to 1/2 HP unit suits light use; 3/4 HP and up grinds more types of waste with fewer jams and runs more quietly.
Garbage disposals on septic systems in Cherokee County
Many homes around Canton, especially in unincorporated Cherokee County and on older or rural lots, use septic tanks instead of public sewer. A garbage disposal sends ground food waste into the tank, where it adds solids that settle to the bottom and break down slowly. That means the tank fills faster and needs pumping more often.
A disposal on a septic system is workable if you use it lightly, avoid grease, coffee grounds and fibrous scraps, and plan for more frequent pumping. Some manufacturers make septic-assist models that inject enzymes. If you're on public sewer, through the City of Canton or the Cherokee County Water and Sewerage Authority, none of this applies, but grease is still the main cause of kitchen drain clogs either way.
What affects the cost of disposal repair or replacement
- Repair or replace. Freeing a jam or resealing a flange is quick; a new unit adds the cost of the disposal.
- Horsepower and features of the new unit.
- Mounting system. Replacing with the same brand often reuses the mount; switching brands means a new mounting assembly.
- Electrical. A first-time install without an outlet or switch needs electrical work.
- Drain condition. Corroded traps or a clogged kitchen line need repair or drain cleaning at the same time.
When a disposal problem is urgent
- Water is leaking into the cabinet and you can't stop it
- The disposal smells of burning or the breaker trips immediately
- The kitchen sink is backing up into the other bowl or the dishwasher
Switch off the power to the disposal and stop using the sink. A burning smell means don't try to reset it again. For a backed-up kitchen drain at night or on a weekend, our emergency plumber is available 24/7.
Keeping a disposal working
- Run cold water before, during and for several seconds after grinding.
- Keep grease, oil, bones, fruit pits, eggshells, coffee grounds, pasta, rice and fibrous peels like celery and corn husks out of it.
- Grind small amounts at a time.
- Freshen it by grinding ice cubes and citrus peel occasionally.
Disposal work is part of the kitchen plumbing we handle as a Canton, GA plumbing company, along with kitchen faucet replacement.
Garbage disposal questions
How long does a garbage disposal last?
Most last around 8 to 15 years, depending on quality and use. Leaks from the body of the unit usually mean it's at the end of its life.
Can I have a garbage disposal with a septic tank?
Yes, with care. It adds solids to the tank, so the tank needs pumping more often. Use it lightly and keep grease and fibrous food out of it.
Why does my disposal smell?
Food residue builds up under the splash guard and on the grinding chamber. Clean the splash guard, then grind ice and citrus peel. A persistent sewer smell may point to a drain or venting issue instead.
